Commons Debate

Any thoughts?

The debate seem poorly attended with the majority of people in attendance there supporting one candidate. Ted McMeekin was a pretty cool guest moderator, even if he is an Ontario Liberal. He served three terms on the SRA when he went to Mac. He was asked what is more boring, parliment or the SRA, to which he responded 'They are both really boring'.

I came late to the debate so I missed half of the opening comments, so I won't comment on those. Overall, I get disapointed that there is no debate in these things and that most of the candidates don't offer a solution or a concrete opinion on the topic. For example, one question asked was on the lack of bike racks on campus. Most responses were like 'bike racks are good!'. How does that solve anything? What about saying something like 'It wasn't on my agenda, but as a student concerned about it I would gladly work with you and assist you in determining how we could go about getting more bike racks on campus. We could assess whether the university is willing to provide the funding, or if the MSU could purchase them and place them where needed'. Too easy!

Ok so on to the questions (paraphrased, I can't read my own short notes):

1. Sarah Iori - "What role should the MSU play in situations such as the mass McKay Hall CA firings?"

Ryan - None, direct to Ombudsman
Drew - Ditto, or MSU dispute resolution
Badar - He put together mediation program, it is designed to handle things like this
Emery - Ditto
Jax - Seek out the facts, educate all involved on the issues
Tyler - He works for Judicial Affairs. Thinks that things like facebook (key player in the scandle) should remain private, the university shouldn't be accessing it to prosecute students/employees

2. Scott Mitchell - "What do you think about perks for MSU volunteers?"
Badar - They are fair, also SRA members should get a honourarium
Drew - Since student apathy is low one incetive is perks. Well deserved benefit
Ryan - Part-time managers work more than they get paid. Its a courtesy to hard work
Emery - He is the only one without a card [as a candidate]. As a student, thinks they could be alright but is worried they could be abused.
Jax - cool as long as they aren't abused
Tyler - They are good. In fact, wants to advertise them more to get the knowledgde out. Plugs his first year guide idea.

3. John Popham - "What iniatives will you take in regards to affordible school? The federal governments Millinium scholarship is set to expire in 2009 with no plans for renewal."
Drew - Focus on provincial lobbying organizations such as OUSA
Ryan - Ditto, it is impossible for one school to affect change on this issue
Badar - Ditto
Tyler - MSU create scholarships
Jax - Be proactive, seek other solutions
Emery - Mobilize students, affect local policitican attitudes

4. Mike Jobba - "What would you do in a Brewsters Million scenario: $2 million dollars, six months to spend it, cannot spend it on anything that would sustain past the six months.
Emery - Wow thats a lot of money, build on property, reduce energy costs
Jax - Endowment fund
Tyler - Ditto. Improve what we have, green technology in making the student center more sustainable
Ryan - Bursaries for international students especially
Drew - Throw it off a MUSC balcony. 1/2 endowment fund, 1/4 to university for a theater, arts quad improvements
Badar - 1/2 for international student bursary, 1/2 for others

5. Unknown - "If you can't vote for yourself, who would you vote for and why?"
Jax - Ryan, based on the emotion he has put into his campaign
Emery - Abstain
Badar - Ryan, because of his encouragement
Drew - Tyler, good ideas
Ryan - Jax, He really likes her
Tyler - Jax

6. Unknown - "How would you deal with the bike rack situation on campus?"
Tyler - this is one of the most important things on campus, need more outside of the athletic center
Jax - Biking is good
Emery - More shelters, all year round, Indoor storage. peddle fell off his bike
Badar - He is for it
Drew - One of his main campaign initatives. Where to get funding? University has no money. Also has to go through University planning committee
Ryan - Doesn't understand why the university doesn't address it. Likes bus shelters. Likes alternative transportation

7. Nick - "How will you address high food prices?"
Ryan - It is difficult to negotiate with hospitality services. MSU offers cheap food. The contract comes up soon, start laying the ground work to discuss prices
Drew - 'Looks like someone read my website'... paradise catering should become a non-profit co-op, or open competition
Badar - I have talking to the director. They will not budge. Investigate expanding Quarters, delivery
Emery - It is ironic that this topic is being discussed in Commons. I love commons food, always got chicken fingers, curly fries and mozza sticks. Mmm.. anyway, 'we should do something about prices'
Jax - Quantify what is too much? What is reasonable. Bring proposal forward. Quality vs Price
Tyler - Provide alternatives. Work with GSA (Phoenix)

8. Jackson Wiegman - "What is the main reason that somebody shouldn't vote for you?"
Jax - I get too passionate
Tyler - I get too excited, will not let something go
Emery - I am EVIL. Performed evil laugh
Drew - His mouth isn't as excited as Jax or pretty like Ryan's
Badar - Only sees the good in things/people
Ryan - Takes on too much, gets too involved. A scatter brain

9. Megan - "How will you get more Social Science Internships?"
Tyler - Network with the community
Jax - What type of internships do students want?
Emery - Career services should take care of it. Engineering [and commerce] have very strong career services
Badar - [Did not record his comment]
Drew - Has an experential office. MSU deals with hundreds of vendors, canvice
Ryan - Symptom of a larger problem. Not the MSU's role. Lobby faculties

10. Scott Mitchell - "What do you think of Peter George's salary being twice that of the Prime Minister yet he is stating that the University now needs to cut back services?"
Ryan - It is unnacceptable. He is in his final four glory years. How bad is the budget crisis actually? I hope he isn't listening
Tyler - I hope he IS listening. So everyone can look him in the eye and tell him what he makes is unreasonable. I am not affraid of him
Drew - Big companies give big salaries and good retirement packages when their companies are in trouble. Other people get cut too
Jax - CEO's get lots of money. Other profs get lots of monet too. Money is a hard topic to discuss. Ask questions of him
Badar - Agrees with Drew
Emery - University is a buisness. If the profs or Peter George provide the value, then they derserve the money ADD VALUE

Closing statements:
Ryan - Focus on empowering students
Drew - Wants to payback what he was given
Badar - Will do the best job he can. Pay it back
Emery - Corruption you can trust. Combat student apathy with war against each other. Brought Bingo cards, get people interested
Jax - Be informed, take ownership of yourselves
Tyler - Has great ideas, is a true student
