Rumour Mill

From the MSU website...
Election results still pending.

The elections committee has recessed and no decision on the winner of the MSU Presidential election has been made. The committee will reconvene tomorrow afternoon, Friday, February 9th.

There have been rumours of the election being invalidated. Please share your rumours, thoughts and conspiracy theories...

One conspiracy theory down.. any more wacky ideas?

I heard that Popham burned all the ballots and declared himself Juggernaut for life.

I hear Jackson was watching them poop.

Actually, joey coleman probably ate them all when it was reveal Drew Mitchell was the winner

Good call on both counts

Quite the anti-climactic day where the results were supposed to be announced, anyway.

I wonder what the Sil's going to do. (Joey, what is the Sil going to do? ;) )

What happens when your lead story doesn't happen? You are left with two blank pages and a bunch of unanswered phone calls.

The Sil is reporting the news. The news being that "no one knows", not even the Sil. I am not covering the story because I had a mid-term today.
The Sil should be on the stands late tomorrow. The lack of results sucks for me, I had spent the last week preparing various segments of analysis. Without knowing the results, my analysis is rather vague.
Of course, I am not the only one to have to rewrite. We will all have to wait and see what happens.
BTW, any idea what I should do about my new ulcers? Damn papercuts, I only thought that could happen on fingers.

Doesn't that mean that they won't be able to report the actual results as quickly on the weekend,
since they seem publish on Thursday/Friday?

(Assuming Friday's vote-counting session goes a little better, then if the results are known sometime on Saturday, there would be several days in between people returning to school on Monday and people reading the results in the Sil on Thursday. Which would mean that they'd more or less give up their opportunity to break the only news they ever get to break.)

Ryan has the most votes but doesnt receive 50+1% of popular support. Abstentions win

Anonymous said...

And where do you get that information?
That is funny mind you, cause MSU bylaws require 50% plus one. Time for a run-off election!
???? vs Moran.

^^ They keep telling us that that's how it works, with the ranking of candidates, instead of just choosing one.

I have trouble believing that, since they don't give us all the details, just a list of who came 1st, 2nd, 3rd, etc... but that's what they say.

andrews vs moran in a run off. the above info is correct. breaking here first

the above is incorrect, abstentions cannot win, if you read the bylaw 9.8.1 it states that "spoiled ballots, declines and and abstentions count only toward te establishment of quorum and not the calculation of majority"

however a more interest point i feel is is from bylaw 9.3.1. which states that "the ballots cast by electors shall be counted, and the results posted, within twenty-four hours of the close of the polls, If, as a result of extenuating circumstances this is not possible, the CRO shall extend the persiod to such a time as a quorate Election Committee meeting can be held", Sarah Iori has already seen one election get invalidated due to her errors (and should have been dismissed then) and is in great risk of getting another one invalidated, as what i heard this delay is caused by poor organization, planning and a lack of the understanding of the bylaws of the CRO and elections committee(which i don't see as being extenuating cirmustances). I personally will be pushing for an invalidation and the dismissal of Sarah Iori, unless there is proof of circumstances that can be considered extenuating

In cases where there is not a clear majority winner on the first count, the candidate with the fewest votes drops off and their ballots are redistributed according to the voter's next choice (if there is none, it then counts as an abstension for that and subsequent ballots).

This process repeats until one candidate has a clear majority.

A run-off would only take place if the top two (or more) candidates had an equal number of votes on the last ballot.

Maybe the ballot-by-ballot results weren't posted last year, but they have been in just about every other year since since the introduction of preferential balloting in 1972.

^^ Well, they damn well better post the ballot-by-ballot results this year. Otherwise I will officially refuse to believe that they actually use instant-runoff.

MORAN wins.

i hope mitchell goes on to do great things..... just away from mac.

he got 5th place on the first ballot......

Horray, they posted the full results!

Other thoughts:
It's a shame Emery didn't make it to the second ballot. He kicked some major ass at the JHE ballot box, especially the first day of voting.
The fact that only 36 people actually abstained entierly is good.

I was a scrutineer for the court. Much to the disapproval of the Elections Committee and Mauranne, I was writing down poll by poll results. I was required to leave that documentation yesterday and had to work today.
Basically, they had no choice but to post them. They hate that I have a website, and that I post information.
When their is information in the MSU; they ask "Why should we tell students?"
I believe they should be asking "Why should we NOT tell students?"
In short, it was coming out anyway. They were smart to do it themselves.

for the count*
